MMMMMM..... smells like SUGAR!

Is there any one thing that has the ability to mend a broken heart.... apologize....express appreciation.... commemorate milestones.... smell amazing???
YES! in a word.... FLOWERS
Although this post features the amazing art of molding and manipulating gum paste into intricate creations of nature, they still evoke similar emotions in all of us: wonder and awe...

Roses touch our romantic heart, with sentiment and tradition:

Cascades of tropical florals or pedals leave there mark in a colorful and whimsical way:

Bunches and single floral stems create an eclectic and interesting way of incorporating several colors on the cake without it looking like a Jackson Pollock. Play with shades of your accent color as well as complimentary colors to get a well rounded and stunning composition:

Surroundings Inspire

As a BC girl and proud Vancouverite, as well as all the hype around moss and birch wood lately, I decided to feature some truly Westcoast inspired wedding cakes at the recent Lovestruck Bridal Show.
This trend of incorporating nature's inspirations will never go out of style!

My Cake in Wedding Bells Magazine!

Check this out!! My cake made it into WEDDING BELLS MAGAZINE "Canada's Prettiest Cake" segment. Here's the link to my cake - MY CAKE"This cake was designed for the little girl inside every bride who loves ruffles, glitter and all that is pretty. Intricate patterns of piping and fondant work were incorporated to pay homage to an antique time when over-embellishment was key." The cake was photographed by Kim Kayln. Check out her website AND the other cakes in the segment.

Cupcakes.

Most people will agree - nothing is cuter than cupcakes. Hence the term "cute as a cupcake", (and the pet name "cupcake"). Almost always, a cake order is accompanied by a large order of cupcakes, to match the cake. And no surprise here - they are always a hit. Whether they're red velvet with cream cheese icing, chocolate with mint chocolate chip icing, lemon, strawberry, coconut, or even just plain old vanilla, there is rarely a cupcake left over (much to the dismay of the bride). I already listed a few flavors of our cupcakes but the list goes on a and on. You name it, we'll make it. Not only are the flavor combinations endless, but the fondant topper list also goes on forever. Flowers of any description, butterflies, cats, dogs, letters, seashells, ANYTHING! Here's a few examples of our famous cupcakes.

Imagination with a little Direction

Crop tops and acid wash jeans... over rouged cheeks and teased hair... legwarmers and spandex. Yes, the second anyone even hints at throwing or attending an 80's party, the "Slash" rocker or "Madonna" popstar in each one of us gets giddy with excitement. Being able to use that theme and a whole lotta imagination gives us the direction we need to turn an ordinary saturday night into something a little more ..... interesting...

A similar idea, although possibly not as radical, can be applied to all wedding cakes: make it THEMED.

Firstly, allow me to make 3 very distinct facts about wedding cakes:

1. It should taste SO good that is makes you forget about that tropical honeymoon for two weeks where a bathing suit is the only logical outfit all the time, which, in essence gives you license to eat 3 pieces....

2. It should be immaculately decorated. Simple or fussy, elegant or funky, nothing and I repeat, NOTHING should be out of place. Your baker should know better.

3. Most important for every bride to realize is that the wedding cake is its own entity. Meaning apart from florals, bridesmaids, boutonnieres, and centerpieces your wedding cake should make its own statement.

This past weekend I helped one couple with all three of these aspects. This sweet couple, having many things in common, settled on a Scuba themed wedding cake and cupcakes. Now before you start thinking "No absolutely not! There will never be snorkels and faces masks anywhere near my wedding cake!" take a look at what they finally decided on.....

At the top of the cupcake tree was a small cutting cake for 10 in our rich and decadent Chocolate Mud flavor, with an "under the sea" feel...

Underneath the cake stood three tiers of Chocolate and Vanilla Buttercreamed Cupcakes. The icing on half was meant to look like waves, and the cutouts on the the other half like simple seastars.... BUT...

My favorite part had to be its crowning glory with a customized handmade sugar topper. This ultra adorable scuba dude and dudette look about ready to dive in and get married in the middle of the caribbean sea.

After all was said and done, this Scuba themed cake was still as beautiful and well put together as any "simple white fondant cake with fresh flowers"..... it just had a pile more personality.

Think about the last theme party you may have attended... makes for beautiful and albeit comical memories!

Not Just For Weddings Anymore!

Let's take a walk through our cake memory and pay tribute to all the past cakes of yesteryear........

OKAY,
DONE,

No more do we want to see layer upon layer of thick buttercream piped to look like basket weave, or silk flowers and pillars creating towers of non-edible dessert... hmm...

This is my promise:
This blog will forever bring its reader's something cutting edge, stunning and of course... decadent

First order of business is the always popular, strictly pink or blue Baby Shower Cake. Where I am ultimately happy to share in the most exciting moments in my clients lives, I am also excited when a new and different idea pops into my head, changing my viewpoint on what normally would include a cake with baby booties and alphabet blocks. Times are changing, and so should our baby showers. With interior design's inclusion of black and white damask and wildly interesting floral patterns, can't we be a little more inventive when it comes to celebrating a new life?
This cake was created for a very fashionable client of mine, and guaranteed, her new bundle of joy will be the same! It features petalled black and white fondant, edged with silver as well as a sample of Cakes By Meg's new line of Fantasy Flowers.
